SCALE is a national organization that grew out of the Campus Y and is currently affiliated with the School of Education at UNC Chapel Hill. It promotes literacy by utilizing evidence-based teaching techniques and a learner-centered approach, including analysis of personal and social justice issues.

UNC Chapel Hill students who are eligible for Federal Work-Study are paired one-on-one with elementary school students to improve their literacy skills. SCALE also houses the NC Literacy Corps, an AmeriCorps program that offers literacy services to K-12 and adult learners and recruits volunteers for host sites.

In addition, SCALE offers resources for its tutors online and hosts a variety of events such as National Literacy Action Week and an annual Read.Write.Act. Conference.

The Bonner Leaders usually start out as America Reads tutors and work their way up to leading trainings at team meetings and participating in the planning and execution of annual events. In the future, SCALE is hoping to increase outreach to recruit more America Reads and Counts tutors and expand their available resources within and beyond North Carolina.
