Areej Hussein is a sophomore Bonner Leader pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Public Health and Nutrition on the Pre-Medical track. Areej is partnered with SCALE to address issues of injustice in the education system. Areej serves underrepresented students in grades K-5 by assisting them in reading, writing, and critical thinking on a weekly basis. During tutoring sessions, Areej caters to her tutees’ individual learning styles and needs. In addition to literacy tutoring, Areej leads workshops on social justice topics during weekly tutor meetings and will be more involved in grant writing this year. Areej will also be starting a Storytelling Club at her site to introduce students to the art of storytelling, and give them the opportunity to explore stories from cultures that are often underrepresented in traditional school libraries. In addition to being a Bonner Leader, Areej is a member of the Nutrition Coalition and the Health Careers Club.
